I’ve always been an athlete. Whether it was basketball, softball, track & field, volleyball, dance, or powerlifting, I always stayed active. But when college happened, I was a little different. I didn’t gain the freshman 15, it was more like the senior 30. I didn’t realize how bad it was till spring of graduation and all I could fit into were yoga pants and sweats. It was embarrassing – you could see it in my face, as my aunt so graciously told me one day.
I traveled to China not soon after that to teach English and the major change in eating habits started my initial weight loss. But after coming back from there, I went up and down with my weight for a long time. I got a trainer to train me for fitness pageants but I soon realized that I needed to do this myself. All along I forgot about the biggest hindrance to weight loss … your mindset! You have to deal with it up there if you want anything to change out here, and that I believe is the key to success in anything in life.
I was introduced to LIMU by my mom, who hadn’t joined at the time since she was still feeling it out. On her third exposure, she asked me if I would come to our neighbor’s house for “something.” He’s one of the most respected people in my community, but I went because I honestly didn’t have anything else to do. At this meeting was where I met a young couple, and when she was speaking, I remember looking around to see who I knew in the room because I wanted to know WHO TOLD THIS LADY MY CURRENT SITUATION? She kept hitting on the job market and how 35% of college graduates can’t find a job in their field. Strike UNO. Then, she talked about how so many college kids are moving home. Strike DOS. At this point, I was looking up because I was like this ain’t nobody but God! By the time she got to student loan debt, I was like “PREACH,” because she had me. I didn’t go that night to sign up for anything or sell anything, but by the end I thought “Whatever she’s doing, I’m DOWN!”
When I got my Fast Track Pack, I was real nonchalant about the LIMU LEAN system and didn’t even think about using it to lose weight. Then I bought a scale and I can tell you this – hips and scales don’t lie. Seeing 223 pop up on that digital scale had my heart in my stomach. So that’s when I decided to get some of the proverbial junk … out the trunk.
I didn’t start the challenge till the week before Thanksgiving 2015, and that was a feat. It was THANKSGIVING, the biggest eating holiday of the year! It literally could not have been tougher, but somehow I lost 10 pounds the first 3 weeks, then 15 pounds within a month and a half, and then 22 pounds in 3 months. I pledged to lose 30 pounds by this past LIMU International Convention and fell a few pounds short. But in the words of one of my non-fat calling aunts, “keep on keeping on.”
I plateaued in March but in April I broke under 200 pounds and recently got under 195 pounds. I still have 15 more pounds to lose but I’ve developed a new lifestyle habit through running, which is amazing since I hated it for most of my life. I even challenged Ryan Barson to 6 miles the morning of this LIMU LIVE, since he was whining about nobody running with him back in Memphis.
As a 2K, I’m not yet where I want to be in my LIMU journey but I look at it this way. At 23, I wasn’t where I wanted to be in my career or my life but with determination, persistence and a WHOLE LOT OF FAITH, I now hold a Master’s degree from the same program I started in. LIMU isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon, and since I wasn’t a runner, I had to teach myself and take it one foot at a time.
So I’m here for the long haul. Through LIMU I’ve found my calling. I’ve found my way in front of lights and thousands of like-minded people. I’m going to BLU up and I can’t thank you enough for teaching me to Be More.
My name is Rachael Holman … and I am LIMU!
