Before you reach for your favorite energy drink, consider this: could it be bad for you? It’s perfectly common to search for a way to remedy fatigue when a cup of coffee just isn’t enough. Energy drink companies have made big business out of extraordinary claims; promises of long-lasting energy, giving wings, making you faster and providing big boosts. After all, gaining a blast of energy by drinking liquid out of a colorful can seem pretty appealing and harmless, right?
While the average energy drink may give you a quick boost, common additive-laden formulations can take it away and then some later on. With a variety of health dangers and few benefits, many can cause rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, dehydration, headaches, insomnia and even worse. You may want to consider healthier, alternative ways to energize yourself, while avoiding unnecessary risks to your body, after taking note of these three ways your favorite drink may be slowing you down.
1. Being Overcaffeinated
The average energy drink contains nearly four times the amount of caffeine found within common soft drinks. A standard six-ounce cup of coffee may have roughly 50–120 milligrams of caffeine, but the caffeine content of energy drinks can exceed 500 mg. This would equal several cups of coffee within just a single gulp! Health authorities recommend adults consume no more than 250mg of caffeine per day, which makes it dangerously easy to exceed the recommended amounts with one canned energy drink. Too much caffeine consumption may raise blood pressure, cause headaches, insomnia and increase the risk of heart attacks.
2. Being Too Sweet
Some energy drinks have up to 50g of sugar per serving and often come in the form of high fructose corn syrup. This amount of sugar may cause your pancreas to produce a flood of insulin as it attempts to handle all the extra sugar. The sugar enters the bloodstream and may be turned into fat by the liver, which leads to a host of other problems. It can also negatively impact your health by causing a greater risk of depression and obesity, which increases the risk of diabetes.
3. Being Addicted
Available evidence demonstrates that sugar and sweetness can produce cravings that are comparable in magnitude to addictive illegal drugs. The synthetic caffeine found within most energy drinks can also be very chemically addictive, which makes the combination of the two twice as addictive. Even worse, the more your brain and body become acclimated to ingesting caffeine, the more caffeine it takes to wake up, making you more addicted as time goes on.
