Rowdy Receives “Inspirational Athlete of the Year” Award

The March of Dimes and the Chrysler Corporation, joined by the Detroit Athletic Club, recently named Rowdy Gaines their “Inspirational Athlete of the Year” for 2009. The annual award is an honor given not just for athletic achievement, but for outreach and charitable accomplishments in the community over the course of an athlete’s life. Chrysler CEO Jim Press expressed his appreciation to Rowdy at the black-tie event, saying “As you could see, we are trying to celebrate the good in life and in our youth, and get through the bad times here in Michigan.  In addition, we raised a ton of money to help save the lives of the unborn.  You were the key to making the event a success. Thank you for your great generosity, your kind words and your inspiration to all of us in attendance.”

Honored by the award, Rowdy continues to give back to various communities, most notably through his Rowdy’s Kidz Swim Clinics which benefit young swimmers by providing hands-on training in free sessions around the country. Rowdy’s Kidz is part of The Limu Company’s charitable initiative, For Goodness Sake, which also includes appearances by Rowdy at children’s hospitals and schools. Rowdy also supports USA Swimming in a variety of ways, including his own Masters Swimming competition at meets, his Blu Frog Team of other Masters swimmers and participation in USA Swimming initiatives such as its Diversity Camp and its Learn to Swim programs.
